Ellen (Behan) Hoge
This looks to be St. Louis in the Fall of 1935. Baby Mary
is in
the crib along with her mother Ellen (Behan) Hoge who would be 34 in this photo.
This B & W picture does not show Ellen's red hair. Ellen Behan was the 4th
of 5 children born to James Behan and Bridget (Hewitt) Behan. She was born
on August 13th, 1901 on the family farm on the Columbia Bottoms along the
Mississippi River in St. Louis, MO. She worked for a time as a bookkeeper
and met Larry Hoge in 1928. She and Larry were married on January 2nd,
1930 at 6 a.m. at the Nativity Church in St. Louis. Her only child was
Mary Bridget born on July 5th, 1935. She worked in the war industry along
with her husband at Carter Carburetor during WWII. When the family moved
to Conception Jct., MO in 1947 she worked several jobs until she began working
full time in the kitchen at the Catholic Monastery. Ellen was a devout
Catholic, and was often spotted on her evening walk in Conception Jct., walking
with her rosary. She was very active her entire life. She died at
the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City on August 24th, 1985.
She is buried along side her husband Larry at St. Columba Cemetery in Conception
Jct. in Nodaway County, MO.

This photo was taken in St. Louis about 1940, so
Mary would be six, Emma would be about 71, and Ellen 39 years old.

It was a B&W photo of Mary and her kitten that was "colorized" for the family by
Leslie Stock. Leslie is an amazing artist, and hand-painted the photo over
the B&W image.
