He was the younge 1 CONC st of three children, but I believe there were two sisters born between 19 1 CONC 23 and 1930 that did not survive. His brothers Norb and Gene were much ol 1 CONC der, and born in St. Joseph, Missouri before the family moved to KC. 1 CONT 1 CONT Baby Leroy Francis was baptized on 6 Sep 1931 in Kansas City at Guardian A 1 CONC ngels Church. His sponsors were Richard and Marguerite Feederle, young 1 CONC er brother and sister of his mom Mary Louise, who was called Louise by h 1 CONC er friends and family. Years later, Dad was confirmed by Bishop O'Har 1 CONC a. His First Communion was on May 1st, 1939 at Good Council. 1 CONT 1 CONT Dad's grade school years were spent at Our Lady of Good Council. After gr 1 CONC ade school he decided to go to Manual High in Kansas City because of the t 1 CONC rade school opportunities they offered. He learned to set line-type and g 1 CONC raduated in 1949. After high school Dad joined the Navy Reserve, and lat 1 CONC er found his way to Conception Abbey where he took a printing job. The 1 CONC re he met and courted Mom. The Korean War interrupted his work plans, a 1 CONC nd he enlisted in the Air Force in lieu of being drafted into the Ar 1 CONC my or the Marines. He attended basic training in Wichita Falls, TX and th 1 CONC en he was on to Biloxi, MS for technical school. The way I remember the s 1 CONC tory, he volunteered to be a cook, so they sent him to Radio Operator scho 1 CONC ol. The technology of the day was Morse Code Key operations so he spent m 1 CONC ost of the next year learning to convert the English language into dots a 1 CONC nd dashes. At the time, radio operators were needed everywhere, and assig 1 CONC nments were unlimited: you could find yourself flying on just about any mu 1 CONC lti-place aircraft of the day, or riding around on a jeep relaying enemy t 1 CONC roop and artillery positions back to headquarters. Dad found himself in t 1 CONC he latter position and nervously headed off to join the fight in the Kore 1 CONC an War. By the time he arrived in late 1952, the war had settled do 1 CONC wn to a stalemate that made his stay there uncomfortable and boring. Aft 1 CONC er the treaty was signed in 1953, Dad rotated back to the states and was s 1 CONC tationed at a Radar site in Madera, California. He had been engaged to M 1 CONC om for some time, so in May of 1954 she left her job in Iowa and flew to C 1 CONC alifornia where they were married on 18 may 1954. The next year their fir 1 CONC st child was born, and in October Dad completed his military commitment a 1 CONC nd he and his family headed back to Missouri where he took a job at Concep 1 CONC tion Abbey working in the print shop. One day we were not very busy and the boss asked me to deliver some pri 1 CONC nting to a Father Kevin Maganegal. After I arrived their he wrote out a ch 1 CONC eck and at the same time asked me if I knew of anyone who would like a j 1 CONC ob at printing. I asked him what sort of printing were we talking about a 1 CONC nd he said it was everything from Linotype to running a press. I said th 1 CONC at I did know someone and he asked who and I said me. The following we 1 CONC ek a priest (I forget his name now) came down from the Abbey and interview 1 CONC ed me. Later he said that he liked what I had told him, but he was concern 1 CONC ed about me living in a small town. So the next weekend I went by tra 1 CONC in to Conception and looked it over and liked what I saw. Told them I wou 1 CONC ld take the job and the rest is history. Love Dad --Leroy Stock 1 CONT 1 CONT 9/1/2005 1 CONT Boy, I had to print this out, you asked so many questions that I needed t 1 CONC he sheet to go by. 1 CONT 1 CONT First off, I told you that I just got out of high school, so that ma 1 CONC de me 18 years old. The Abbey had a bunk house for the workers and that w 1 CONC as were I lived. It was just a one room cubical wit a bed, closet, and a d 1 CONC resser. Yes, I was going with Eula Lee a 1 CONC nd one raining day I was at her house and she had invited two of her be 1 CONC st friends over to meet me. In walked two wet gals and it was love at fir 1 CONC st sight when I saw your mother. It took me a few weeks to get the ner 1 CONC ve to ask her out, but I did. Also at the time, I was dating Lucille Pete 1 CONC rs and one Sunday we went down to St. Joe to a movie called Third Man Them 1 CONC e. All the way their she hardly said a word and it was difficult f 1 CONC or me to keep the conversation going. Needless to say that it was not li 1 CONC ke that when your mother and I went on our first date, she rattled on and o 1 CONC n. By the way, we went to Maryville to a movie, I don't remember what we s 1 CONC aw. Why did I remember the movie with Lucille Peters? Your mother would ne 1 CONC ver let me forget it, even 30 years later. 1 CONT 1 CONT You asked about my car, no I did not have one when I first started in Conc 1 CONC eption. Yes, I would go home on week-ends and come back by Bus to Stanber 1 CONC ry where there was usually somebody their to give me a ride back to the Ab 1 CONC bey. One weekend, there was no one in town that I knew, so I started to wa 1 CONC lk. Cars passed me by, but they would not pick me up, I ended up walking a 1 CONC ll the way to the Abbey. We are talking about 9 miles, cold and 11:00 P 1 CONC M, but I made it. The next time that I went home, I bought me a 47 Chevy C 1 CONC lub Coupe. 1 CONT 1 CONT I worked two years before I went into the Air Force and Two years aft 1 CONC er I returned to the Abbey. 1 CONT 1 CONT By the way, at five AM I remembered that the priest who interviewed me w 1 CONC as Father Walter Heeney, I went thru the alphabet 6 times trying to rememb 1 CONC er his name. If you don't have a copy you can check with Dad becau 1 CONC se he was handing them out a few years ago. I have a copy that has been s 1 CONC cribbled on, but there is a lot of great information there. The sad pa 1 CONC rt is, Bro. Louis didn't give us much background information, other than j 1 CONC ust names and birth and death dates. But it provides a good starting poi 1 CONC nt for anyone interested in delving in. 1 CONT 1 CONT Brother Louis traced the Stock Family back to our family matriarch, Moni 1 CONC ca (Heite) Stock. She was born in Germany in 1831 and immigrated to th 1 CONC is country with her family in 1884. She had six children by two men, bo 1 CONC th named Stock, and all of her children were born in Bavaria, Germany. H 1 CONC er first husband was John Stock. She and John had four children: Maria, F 1 CONC rank, Emil and Leo. She next married Karl Stock and had twins, Karl and J 1 CONC oseph. Baby Karl died in infancy and we are descendents of his twin broth 1 CONC er Joseph. 1 CONT 1 CONT Apparently Monica's first husband John and oldest daughter Maria stay 1 CONC ed in Germany. The only thing I know about John Stock is that he di 1 CONC ed in 1887. I don't know what happened to his marriage to Monica, or wh 1 CONC at his relationship was (if any) to her second husband, Karl Stock. Mar 1 CONC ia Stock married a man named Johann Herbert and they had three daughter 1 CONC s. She died in 1931. 1 CONT 1 CONT Monica set out on her great adventure for the new world with her second hu 1 CONC sband Karl and four sons. They settled in St. Joseph, Mo. 1 CONT 1 CONT All of these folks lived in St. Joe at one time. I've had a real probl 1 CONC em keeping this family straight in my mind because of all the Stock cousi 1 CONC ns with the same name. Of Monica's six children and 22 grand children, th 1 CONC ere are three Franks, three Emils, three Leos, three Josephs, three Mar 1 CONC ys and two Roses. It gets worse in the next generation as even more so 1 CONC ns get named after their fathers....but I digress. 1 CONT 1 CONT Here is list of our direct ancestors: 1 CONT 1 CONT Karl Stock b. 1842 d. 13 Dec 1906 1 CONT Monica Heid b. 17 Jul 1831 d. 23 Jun 1912 1 CONT 1 CONT Joseph Stock b. 11 Jan 1869 d. 17 Jul 1942 1 CONT Karl Stock b. 11 Jan 1869 d. 1871 1 CONT 1 CONT I don't know much about Karl Stock. I have not been able to find him in a 1 CONC ny census data, but I believe he and Monica will turn up. It's a lot of n 1 CONC ames I have yet to sift through. 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 CONT October 8th, 2003 Letter to Sibs 1 CONT Hi Folks, 1 CONT 1 CONT One of the frustrating things about searching for your roots is that ma 1 CONC ny of the people who can answer your questions have long since passed o 1 CONC n. We descend from lower class German, Irish and English immigrants who s 1 CONC truggled daily to survive, and had little of the free time we enjoy n 1 CONC ow to give thought to such things as, "Where did I come from"....and certa 1 CONC inly there was no time to record their thoughts. It is my hope that our g 1 CONC reat, great grandchildren have access to more information about us th 1 CONC an we have of our ancestors. 1 CONT 1 CONT But our questions remain...why did Monica and Karl Stock leave everythi 1 CONC ng they cared about and take their four boys to an uncertain future. W 1 CONC hy leave Germany, and why come to Missouri? By 1884, Monica was alrea 1 CONC dy in her middle 50s and Karl in his 40s, and the boys ranged in age fr 1 CONC om 25 to 15. 1 CONT 1 CONT I have done a little research, and it's sometimes informative to compare k 1 CONC nown dates and places of our ancestors to the historical record. This h 1 CONC as allowed me to make some educated guesses as to how and why we got here. 1 CONT 1 CONT About 5 million Germans immigrated to the United States in the 19th Centur 1 CONC y, with almost 2 million of those coming over in the decade of the 1880s a 1 CONC lone. The largest single year was 1883, which saw 250,000 Germans make t 1 CONC he trip. The three most common reasons were political, economic and relig 1 CONC ious opportunity. 1 CONT 1 CONT The country we know of as Germany did not exist until 1870. Prior to th 1 CONC at there was a loose Confederation of German speaking states like Prussi 1 CONC a, Bavaria, Baden etc. A war forced the northern and southern German stat 1 CONC es to band together to fight the Austrians and later the French under Barr 1 CONC on Von Bismarck. This became the "Second Reich", but it caused politic 1 CONC al strife for many. Catholic Germans were persecuted during the "Kulturkam 1 CONC pf", and the Jesuit order was expelled from the country at about this tim 1 CONC e. I don't believe this affected our ancestors, because these people sett 1 CONC led in Pennsylvania. Our folks were probably motivated by economic forces 1 CONC : 1 CONT 1 CONT "Although conditions in the German states were not as bad as in Ireland, c 1 CONC rop failures, inheritance laws, high rents, high prices, and the effec 1 CONC ts of the industrial revolution led to widespread poverty and suffering. R 1 CONC elatives and friends who emigrated first would write back and encourage ot 1 CONC hers to follow. This led to "chain migrations" and group settlements". 1 CONT 1 CONT I believe this is exactly what happened to our folks. All of the proble 1 CONC ms listed above made any hope for economic opportunity seem unachievabl 1 CONC e, so the decision was made to look to the "new world". 1 CONT 1 CONT Stock Family in 1884: 1 CONT 1 CONT Karl Stock age 42 1 CONT Monica Stock age 53 1 CONT 1 CONT Frank Stock age 25 1 CONT Emil Stock age 24 1 CONT Leo Stock age 20 1 CONT Joseph Stock age 15 1 CONT 1 CONT I believe Emil and his wife Antonia came over first in 1882. They had be 1 CONC en married since 1877 but their first child wasn't born until 1883 in Miss 1 CONC ouri. They were probably lured to Missouri by brochures that tout 1 CONC ed it as the "Rhineland of the West". The Rhineland was, and is, the mo 1 CONC st beautiful part of Germany, and I believe this appealed to our folks w 1 CONC ho were from the more industrialized areas in south Bavaria. The trip w 1 CONC as probably made by steamship and steam-powered trains, and they probab 1 CONC ly came to St. Joe because of friends and family that were already ther 1 CONC e. Germans in the last century tended to form together in small German co 1 CONC mmunities where they would start their own ethnic churches and schools. P 1 CONC rotestant Germans settled in Minnesota and Wisconsin, while the Catholi 1 CONC cs preferred the Midwest states of Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky and Missour 1 CONC i. 1 CONT 1 CONT After they were settled they encouraged others to come, and in 1883 Moni 1 CONC ca and Karl came with Frank and his fiancé Barbara, Leo and teenager Josep 1 CONC h. Emil and Frank were carpenters and cabinet makers. Joseph became a ba 1 CONC ker, and I'm not sure about Leo, but I do know his son Leo Jr. became a ca 1 CONC binet maker, so odds are he was in the business also. I'm also not sure y 1 CONC et what Karl did for a living. Chances are he too was a baker or a carpen 1 CONC ter. In case you've forgotten, Joseph was our Great Grandfather. 1 CONT 1 CONT There is a huge gap in the census record because the 1890 census was destr 1 CONC oyed in a fire in the 1920s, but by 1900 our ancestors owned their own hom 1 CONC es, and all could speak, read and write English. 1 CONT 1 CONT When I get some more time I'll take a look at our German relatives on Gran 1 CONC dma Stock's side; the Feederles and the Geigers. They were also from sou 1 CONC th Germany in the Baden Province. But I'm pretty sure the Stock's and t 1 CONC he Feederles didn't get together until they met in St. Joseph when "Joe m 1 CONC et Louise". 1 CONT 1 CONT Brother Mike 1 CONT 1 CONT Could his names have been spelled Carl? 1 CONT Carl Stock found in: 1 CONT Germans to America, 1875-1888 1 CONT Age: 40 1 CONT Gender: Male 1 CONT Occupation Code: Laborer 1 CONT Country: Bavaria 1 CONT Last Residence: Unknown 1 CONT Final Destination: USA 1 CONT Purpose for Travel: Staying in USA, but not a citizen of USA 1 CONT Mode of Travel: Steerage 1 CONT Port of Embarkation: Bremen 1 CONT Manifest ID Number: 37358 1 CONT Ship's Name: Rhein 1 CONT Date of Arrival: Jun. 02, 1883 Data Introduction 0 @I0280@ INDI 1 NAME Anne Marie /SUMMERS/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 JUN 1985 2 PLAC Kansas City, MO 1 FAMC @F0133@ 0 @I0281@ INDI 1 NAME Erin Nicole /STOCK/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 31 AUG 1983 2 PLAC Kansas City, MO 1 GRAD 2 DATE 2002 2 PLAC Blue Valley Northwest High 1 _DEG 2 DATE MAR 2006 2 PLAC Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University 1 FAMC @F0128@ 0 @I0282@ INDI 1 NAME Louisa Amanda /SMITH/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1842 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1910 2 PLAC St. Louis, MO 1 FAMS @F0186@ 1 FAMC @F0298@ 1 NOTE @NI0282@ 0 @NI0282@ NOTE 1 CONC Directory - St. Louis, Missouri - 1905 1 CONT 1 CONT Jones, Samuel E. S. service from Oct. 2 to 30, 1861, for three years. It 1 CONT was organized under the president's second call upon the state 1 CONT for troops, which authorized Gov. Downey to raise a regiment 1 CONT of cavalry and four regiments of infantry. 1 CONT 1 CONT Its first colonel was the experienced cavalry officer Andrew 1 CONT J. Smith, then serving as major, 1st U. S. cavalry, but like 1 CONT the other regular army officers assigned to the command of 1 CONT California volunteer regiments in 1861 was not permitted by 1 CONT the war department to retain his command. He resigned Nov. 1 CONT 13, 1861, and was succeeded by Col. Sims. 1 CONT 1 CONT After the completion of its organization and a short period at 1 CONT Camp Alert for drill and discipline, the regiment was 1 CONT stationed by companies at various posts in California, Nevada, 1 CONT Utah and New Mexico. During its long term of service this 1 CONT regiment marched thousands of miles, and skirmished with 1 CONT Indians from New Mexico to Oregon. It saw hard service in 1 CONT California, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico and Wyoming. 1 CONT 1 CONT During the month of Jan. 1863, Cos. A, H, K and M, under Maj. 1 CONT McGarry, constituted the larger part of a force under the 1 CONT general command of Col. Connor of the 3rd Cal. infantry, which 1 CONT moved on an expedition against the Snake and Shoshone Indians 1 CONT on Bear River, in northern Utah and southern Idaho. These 1 CONT Indians had murdered and plundered many emigrants on the route 1 CONT to California, and more recently had been murdering miners 1 CONT passing to and from Salt Lake City to the new gold mines in 1 CONT Washington and Dakota Territories. 1 CONT 1 CONT On the 28th the Indians were found admirably posted in a 1 CONT ravine north of Bear River, but after a severe engagement 1 CONT lasting several hours they were finally dislodged from their 1 CONT natural fortress and almost annihilated. The loss of the 2nd 1 CONT cavalry was 12 killed and 45 wounded, several of the latter 1 CONT mortally, among them Lieut. Darwin Chase, of Co. K. 1 CONT 1 CONT The command suffered severely from exposure incident to the 1 CONT winter campaign and over 50 of the men were in hospital with 1 CONT frosted feet. Col. Connor warmly congratulated his officers 1 CONT and men for their bravery in this desperate action, saying: 1 CONT "After a rapid march of four nights in intensely cold weather, 1 CONT through deep snow and drifts, which you endured without murmur 1 CONT or complaint even when some of your numbers were frozen with 1 CONT cold and faint with hunger and fatigue, you met an enemy who 1 CONT have heretofore, on two occasions, defied and defeated regular 1 CONT troops, and who have for the last 15 years been the terror of 1 CONT the emigrants -- men, women and children -- and citizens of 1 CONT those valleys, murdering and robbing them without fear of 1 CONT punishment. * * * You encountered the enemy, greatly your 1 CONT superior in numbers, and had a desperate battle. Continuing 1 CONT with unflinching courage for over 4 hours you completely cut 1 CONT him to pieces, captured his property and arms, destroyed his 1 CONT stronghold, and burned his lodges." 1 CONT 1 CONT The following remarks on return of Co. M, for April, 1863, are 1 CONT typical of the kind of service in which the various companies 1 CONT of the regiment were engaged: "The company has traveled 425 1 CONT miles in the saddle during the past month. Had three 1 CONT engagements with the Indians during the month, winning each 1 CONT fight. Left Camp Douglas (Utah Ter.) on the 20th instant, and 1 CONT arrived at the post on the 26th. During the year just ended, 1 CONT in which this company has performed duty in Nevada and Utah 1 CONT Territories, it has traveled over 2,600 miles of a direct 1 CONT march, had four Indian battles (Bear River, U. T., among the 1 CONT number), and made treaty with Winnemucca, chief of the Piute 1 CONT tribe, on Truckee River, near Pyramid Butte." 1 CONT 1 CONT Says the return of Co. B. for Nov., 1865: "In accordance with 1 CONT P. O. No. 35, dated Nov. 12, 1865, First Lieut. R. A. Osmer, 1 CONT 2nd cavalry, and 60 enlisted men of Co. B. proceeded to the 1 CONT Black Rock Mountains on Nov. 13, 1865, taking with them 1 1 CONT mountain howitzer. At Willow Creek Station, 35 miles from 1 CONT this post (Dun Glen, Nev.), 7 enlisted men, who were on 1 CONT detached service, joined company; also 2 citizens and 10 1 CONT Indian warriors under command of Capt. 'Sou' (friendly Piute). 1 CONT 1 CONT On Friday, at daybreak, attacked the Indian camp 5 miles from 1 CONT Black Rock Mountains, and 105 miles northwest of this post. 1 CONT Killed about 120 Indians in all; of these about 80 were bucks, 1 CONT but the Indian allies could not be restrained from a general 1 CONT slaughter, neither could a squaw be distinguished from a buck 1 CONT in the general fight, and but 1 Indian is supposed to have 1 CONT escaped. 1 CONT 1 CONT Captured a quantity of ammunition, several guns, 5 Indian 1 CONT ponies, and destroyed a large lot of provisions. These were 1 CONT the same Indians who killed and robbed the teamster two weeks 1 CONT ago, as some of his load was found in camp. The loss was 1 CONT private David W. O'Connell, killed; and Sergeant Lansdon and 1 CONT private Moon, wounded. Detachment returned to this post Nov. 1 CONT 20, 1865. Distance traveled, 250 miles." 1 CONT 1 CONT This company, after its organization, commanded by Capt; 1 CONT Cremony, was ordered to the southern part of the state, became 1 CONT a part of Gen. Carleton's "California column," and marched 1 CONT with that command to New Mexico. 1 CONT 1 CONT On the expiration of their terms of service the original 1 CONT members of the 2nd were mustered out in the autumn of 1864, 1 CONT and the regiment, composed of reenlisted veterans and 1 CONT recruits, was continued in service. It was mustered out by 1 CONT companies from Feb. 1 to July 31, 1866. 1 CONT 1 CONT This regiment furnished a considerable number of officers for 1 CONT other California regiments and was exceeded by none of the 1 CONT other state organizations in the quality and character of the 1 CONT services rendered the state and government. 1 CONT 1 CONT Source: The Union Army, vol. 4, p. 416 1 CONT 1 CONT Battles Fought 1 CONT 1 CONT Fought at Queens River, NE. 1 CONT Fought on 09 April 1862 at Owens River, CA. 1 CONT Fought on 19 December 1862 at Santa Fe, NM. 1 CONT Fought on 29 January 1863 at Bear River, UT. 1 CONT Fought on 29 January 1863 at Bear River, Utah Terr.. 1 CONT Fought on 03 March 1863 at Camp Independence, CA. 1 CONT Fought on 15 April 1863 at Spanish Fork, Utah Terr.. 1 CONT Fought on 15 July 1863 at Temecula, CA. 1 CONT Fought on 26 July 1865 at Paradise Valley, CA. 1 CONT Fought on 17 November 1865 at Pine Forest, NE. 1 CONT Fought on 12 January 1866 at Fish Creek, NE. 1 CONT Fought on 15 February 1866 at Rock Canyon, NE. 1 CONT Fought on 19 May 1866 at Salis Station, CA. 1 CONT 1 CONT Save Person to My Ancestry 1 CONT 1 CONT View printer-friendly 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 CONT Hi Folks, 1 CONT 1 CONT Just received the Civil War pension file for Gustave Feederle Sr. from t 1 CONC he National Archives. The file is huge, over 50 pages and covers 36 yea 1 CONC rs from 1890 until 1926 when Gus died. 1 CONT 1 CONT Gus Sr. is our great great grandfather. His son was Dad's grandfather, G 1 CONC us Jr., whom Dad had a relationship with as a child and young man. He 1 CONC re is what I have learned about Gus Sr.: 1 CONT 1 CONT He was born on June 8th, 1841 in Baden, Germany. He was the fifth of sev 1 CONC en children born to Karl Feederle and Rosina (Stuckle) Feederle. He immig 1 CONC rated to this country with his brothers in 1860 and settled in Texas, prob 1 CONC ably San Antonio. When he was 19 he enlisted in the Missouri Voluntee 1 CONC rs in St. Louis on April 22nd, 1861 and was discharged several months lat 1 CONC er on September 3rd, 1861. I'm not sure why, or what he did for the ne 1 CONC xt three years, but on January 2nd, 1865 he shows up in San Francisco a 1 CONC nd re-enlists, this time in the 2nd California Cavalry. He probably join 1 CONC ed up to collect the $300 bounty the state was offering. He served the 1 CONC re for about a year along with his brother Max Feederle and was mustered o 1 CONC ut at Sacramento on February 1st, 1866. 1 CONT 1 CONT Over the next few years he bounced around a bit. After leaving Californ 1 CONC ia he spent the rest of 1866 in St. Joseph, MO. In 1867 and part of 18 1 CONC 68 he lived in Denver, CO and Omaha, NE. In 1868 he moved to New Orlean 1 CONC s, LA where he met and married our great great grandmother, Marguerite Hen 1 CONC ry (he spelled it "Marguritha"). The couple were married in 1870 and mov 1 CONC ed to Houston, TX later that year. They had two children: 1 CONT Gustave Feederle Jr. b: Oct. 1st, 1871 in Houston, TX 1 CONT Wilhemine (Minnie) Feederle b: Dec. 29th, 1875 in Houston. 1 CONT 1 CONT Note: Gus Sr. listed his daughter as Minnie Bettis in 1890. 1 CONT 1 CONT I found the family in the 1880 census living in Houston, and accordi 1 CONC ng to pension records, the family moved to St. Joseph, MO later that yea 1 CONC r. 1 CONT 1 CONT I'm not sure why they ended up in St. Joe, except maybe the fact that the 1 CONC re was a thriving German-American community there. Gus Sr's brothers M 1 CONC ax and Fred also found their way to St. Joe. Gus Sr. listed his occupati 1 CONC on as tin smith or "tinner", and later in census data he listed "musicia 1 CONC n" as his occupation. 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1890 the National Government passed the first veteran's pension progr 1 CONC am that provided vets or their widows $12 per month. By then Gus Sr. w 1 CONC as almost 50 and suffering from a variety of ailments including a herni 1 CONC a, hemorrhoids, and piles. He also listed several other maladies th 1 CONC at he couldn't prove. He received a half pension of $6.00 per month for h 1 CONC is hernia. He was re-evaluated every several years but his pension did n 1 CONC ot increase substantially until 1912 when congress changed the law to all 1 CONC ow anyone over 70 to receive $15 per month. It was raised again in 19 1 CONC 16 to $24 and then again in 1918 to $35. By 1920 Gus Sr. was living wi 1 CONC th Gus Jr. and his family and drawing a pension of $50 per month...probab 1 CONC ly substantial money in those days. 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1923 Gus Sr. entered the Western Branch of the National Home for Disabl 1 CONC ed Veterans in Kansas. He left later that year, but by Jun of 1924 he w 1 CONC as back. Not sure why he left...maybe he was mad when he realized he wou 1 CONC ld have to give up his pension. 1 CONT 1 CONT Gus Sr. died at the National Soldier's Home in Virginia on February 17t 1 CONC h, 1926. Cause of death was listed as general arterial sclerosis, or mo 1 CONC re simply, old age. I thought it sad that Gus Sr. died so far away from a 1 CONC nyone who cared about him. He listed Gus Jr. back in St. Joseph as ne 1 CONC xt of kin. Probably he could no longer care for himself and this was h 1 CONC is best option. I may try and order a death certificate just to find o 1 CONC ut where he is buried. 1 CONT 1 CONT Gus us
